How to Get Your Church Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI
To get your church recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity, make your website readable without JavaScript, put your service times, address and ministries in plain text, complete your Google Business Profile, and answer the exact questions people ask AI on their own pages.
Mission Creative is a church production and creative company, founded in 2004 by Dave Bookhout and Heredes Ribeiro and based in Tampa, Florida, that builds brands, sermon series and capital campaign creative, video, audio/video/lighting production systems, websites, and AI training and workflows for churches nationwide. We used this exact process on missioncreative.com.
People still check your site before they visit: Thom Rainer reports about seven in ten first-time guests say they looked at the church's website first (Lifeway Research: the front door churches often forget). More of those searches now start with “ask AI.”
Step 1Make sure AI can read your site
The crawlers behind ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity do not run JavaScript (Vercel: the rise of the AI crawler). If your site builds its content in the browser, they see a nearly empty page. Test: open your homepage, choose View Page Source (not Inspect) and search for your service time. If it isn't there, ask your web provider for server-side rendering or prerendering.
Step 2Put the basics in text on the homepage
Service times, full street address, parking, what to expect, kids' check-in, and the language of each service. Typed text, not baked into an image or video. Rainer's team found a missing or buried address and service times is the most common reason a guest decides not to come.

Plain text a crawler can read: campaign name, scripture and next step up top. Step 3Complete your Google Business Profile
Correct category (Church), hours for each service, photos of real people, a link to your plan-a-visit page, replies to every review.
Step 4Give every important question its own page
Kids, students, Spanish services, groups, baptism, each campus. Name the neighborhood in the first sentence.
Step 5Add a plain-language FAQ
Write it the way a newcomer asks: “What should I wear?” “Is there something for my 4-year-old?” “How long is the service?” Two or three sentences each.
Step 6Add structured data
schema.org Church (address, geo, service times), Event for special services, FAQPage for your FAQ.
Step 7Keep your facts identical everywhere
Name, address, phone and service times on your site, Google, Apple Maps, Facebook, Instagram bio and denominational directories.
Step 8Test every month
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity “church near (your neighborhood) with a kids ministry,” “Spanish church in (your city),” “what time is (your church name) on Sunday?” Log whether you appear and whether the facts are right; fix the page that's wrong.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
No. You can only make your information easy to read, accurate and consistent.
Does a Wix, Squarespace or Webflow site work?
Usually yes; most render their text on the server. App-style builders often don't. Run the test in Step 1.
How long does it take?
Fixes to Google show up in days to weeks; AI assistants refresh on their own schedules, often weeks.
Can Mission Creative do this for us?
Yes. We audit, rebuild and write church websites with AI search in mind. Start a website project.
